The Open Secret of MRA: An examination of Mr Driberg's "critical examination" of Moral Re-Armament"

From the back cover: At this moment, when a world-wide attack is being made upon Christian faith and morals, the forces of Christianity must be united and effective. The Master of St Peter’s College, Oxford, the Rev. J. P. Thornton-Duesbery, believes that Moral Re-Armament has an important part to play, yet there is widespread ignorance and not a little misunderstanding about it.

ln this book he sets out to describe what MRA is, how it works, who finances it, and what it is out to do in the world. He does so in a closely reasoned reply to the arguments of one of MRA’s bitterest critics, Mr Tom Driberg, who has attacked it persistently since 1928 when he obtained a popular newspaper scoop by writing about it. Mr Thornton-Duesbery submits Mr Driberg’s recurring themes of criticism to scholarly analysis, meeting each point from his own observations of MRA over the last forty years and from his wide theological studies.

‘They are commando forces of the Church, pioneering where the larger body cannot always go,’ he writes. ‘It is because I believe that Mr Driberg is, consciously or unconsciously, driving a wedge between two parts of the same army that I have decided to examine his pamphlet, MRA - A critical examination. It includes most of the stock criticisms of MRA. If I can dispose of his arguments, I shall go far to satisfy those who have, often unknowingly, adopted his objections.’

Mr Thornton-Duesbery, after taking three Firsts at Oxford, became successively Fellow and Chaplain of Corpus Christi, Headmaster of St George’s School, Jerusalem, and Principal of Wycliff Hall, the Oxford theological college. He has been Master of St Peter's since 1955.
