Modernizing America

"Action papers of national purpose"

John McCook Roots, an honors graduate of Harvard and former ‘Crimson’ editor, was a foreign correspondent in China and Russia during Communism’s rise to power. He has been a lecturer for the Foreign Policy Association, and his profiles of Asian revolutionaries for The New York Times and North American Newspaper Alliance were among the first to appear in the West. For many years a Director of Moral Re-Armament in the United States and Britain, his work and travels in 81 countries have given him an exceptional insight into the key issues of our time.

These action papers from the Demonstration for Modernizing America give the basic concepts behind the training of seven thousand youth at Mackinac Island, Michigan last summer. In them, Mr Roots has compiled a citizen’s guide to such burning questions as Vietnam, the campus revolt, foreign aid, Red China, the Congo, world communism, India’s future, the US image, and the Moscow-Peking split.

Fourteen pages of pictures at the end portray young America’s captivating musical spectacular – “Sing-Out ‘65” – which has taken audiences by storm from the Eighth Army in Korea to the high schools in Watts and the Air Force Academy here at home.

Stan Musial, Personal Assistant to the President of Physical Fitness, says in his Foreword: “This book, written by some of the ablest men in America and abroad, represents just about the best thinking I know on the issues of the day. I hope that it will be widely read by students and faculty, by business men and churchmen, by labor and industry, and by all those who are active in civic and governmental affairs. Particularly I hope it will be read by my colleagues whom I know so well in the world of sport.”
