"Interpreting America to the world and the world to America"
"Michael Henderson is a poignant storyteller illuminating the joys, foibles and tragedies of mankind. On History’s Coattails makes you feel life more deeply and thus understand it with more hope." Georgie Anne Geyer
" 'Don't believe everything you read in the papers or see on TV' is often said," comments Henderson. But a more accurate truth is: don't believe that what you read in the papers or see on TV is everything. News revels in the new, the different, the bizarre; so we get a view of only part of our world and sometimes a skewed one at that."
On History's Coattails sets out to redress the balance. It gives us an informative and entertaining look at life through the perspective of an Englishman living in the United States. It is a worthy successor to his critically-acclaimed A Different Accent, of which they said:
“His perspective is universal. He also exhibits a remarkable ability to see both sides of a situation. The result is opinions that do not come across as opinionated.” Christian Science Monitor
“A Different Accent should be on every American's — certainly every thinking American's bookshelf. Henderson speaks simply, clearly and unjudgingly, also with frequent humor.” Cincinnati Enquirer
“A Different Accent reflects his belief that the United States, in spite of its shortcomings, stands as a symbol of hope for most of the world's people and that individuals can and do make a difference in shaping world affairs.” George Washington Honor Medal Citation.
Michael Henderson, his wife Erica, and daughter Juliet, have lived for nine years in Portland, Oregon. On History's Coattails is a selection of some of the 375 talks he has given on Oregon public radio stations. He has been President of Willamette Writers, of the English-Speaking Union and of the World Affairs Council of Oregon. For two years, he was Moderator of World Press in Review on KOAP-TV, and is now a newspaper columnist and commentator for five radio stations.
