Reform, From the Bottom Up

Reflections on the MRA Consultation Process 1988-2002

This is a personal account of a 15 year period of self-reflection by a movement founded more than a hundred years ago in Oxford. The story tells how a multi-faith, multi-national, spiritual movement set out to create a collective leadership.

Between 1988 and 2002, the global movement undertook its first ever sustained reflection on its culture and its way of doing and deciding most everything. That reflection consisted of a complex consultative process that took shape around twenty week-long meetings held in different venues around the world. These involved hundreds of the movement’s activists and led to important changes in the movement’s culture and governance.
