International Day of Peace Event in Cardiff

Representatives of different faiths took part in an occasion to mark this UN-sponsored initiative

On 20th September, the International Day of Peace, people came together in South Wales for an evening in one of Cardiff's beautiful civic buildings, the Temple of Peace and Health, under the sponsorship of the UN Association and the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University. Professor Bharat Jasani (who with his wife Anand supported the IofC-initiated Clean Slate Campaign in 1999) spoke of the way in which war often came about as a result of injustice and poverty and quoted Mahatma Ghandi's saying "There's enough in the world for everyone's need but not for everyone's greed". Idrees Khan spoke of his experience of peace and forgiveness when he felt guided to apologise to Hindus and Sikhs for Muslim violence at the time of the partition of India and how he went on to heal divisions in his own family on the basis of change in himself. His story is one of 19 written by Muslims in the booklet Why Terror. Helena Foggitt warmly recommended the book to the audience describing it as "a timely book which was exceptional and inspirational". A young man from California now living in Cardiff said: "we always see peace as coming from out there, but never think we can do something about it ourselves".
