These psychologists and sociologists have done lots
of experiments on rats and chimps. And they've
drawn all kinds of conclusions, which they think
apply to human beings—us. But we've done. our
own private research into rats.
So if you're in the rat race
Fighting for top place,
Ask yourself,
Pray, hey, can you tell
Just who might you find in the rat race?
These psychologists
Can teach their rats not to fight,
Or to steer to the left,
Or to veer to the right—
Come to think of it, | haven't come across a
psychologist who can teach his rats to go straight.
Maybe that's the difference between rats and
people. Maybe that's the difference between people
and psychologists!
If you mix up his signals,
Then the rat gets neurosis,
If you feed him on whisky,
Then his liver cirrhosises,
If you get him too high
He'll see myxomatosis—
The conclusion | come to,
Just what everyone knows is:
That rats behave an awful lot like human beings.
But the trouble really starts when human beings
start behaving like rats.
