Howard Cooke

Governor‑General of Jamaica who brought delegations to Caux

Sir Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke (November 13, 1915 – July 11, 2014) was a Jamaican educator, politician, and statesman, who served as Governor‑General of Jamaica from August 1,  1991 until February 15,  2006. Born in Goodwill, St. James, he began his professional life as a teacher — a vocation he pursued for 23 years, rising to headmaster and serving also as President of the Jamaica Union of Teachers.

Cooke entered politics early: in 1938 he helped found the People's National Party (PNP), and over decades held seats in the West Indies Federal Parliament, the Jamaican Parliament, and several ministerial portfolios, culminating in his eventual role as Governor‑General.

Beyond politics and education, Cooke was deeply committed to spiritual and moral renewal. He was closely involved with Moral Re‑Armament — embracing its emphasis on moral integrity, reconciliation and personal transformation. (See: Jamaica Gleaner) He brought multiple Jamaican delegations to conferences at the Caux Conference Centre in Switzerland in an effort to inspire ethical leadership and interfaith cooperation back home in Jamaica.

As Governor‑General, he championed unity, social justice and national character building. His life combined service in education, politics, faith, and moral action — leaving a legacy as a national unifier committed to the spiritual as well as civic development of Jamaica.

His biographer, Yvonne Coke, wrote: "‘God is Good’ reflects the inner core of Sir Howard’s life as he never failed to shock us with this bold statement of faith and encouragement to the distressed. Whether it is the “bad boy” in the cane fields of Goodwill or the teacher in Belle Castle, Portland or the politician, the life insurance salesman: the community builder: the husband, father, grandfather and counsellor: or the Man of God in King’s House, Sir Howard taught us that God is good. His personal acts of sensitivity and kindness to the troubled souls in the nation and to the high and lofty alike as he gave of his personal resources and his time and encouragement, were testaments of his unwavering faith in the goodness of God."
