This is a book for which many individuals and groups have been waiting. Those with no faith often feel that there must be something in prayer and wish they could find out what it is. This is their chance. There are others who have said the Lord’s Prayer countless times and wonder why it means so little to them. This book gives them an opportunity to find out the reason and the remedy. The world is in ferment. Is there ageless truth that can be found, or only modern opinions that can be advanced? Is there a place for prayer in a scientific age? Can it play an effective part in feeding the hungry, dealing with the Bomb, and in pointing humanity towards both a new type of man and a purposeful future? Roger Hicks takes the Lord’s Prayer phrase by phrase and shows its relevance for the Christian and the non-Christian today, and the essential part it can play in building the coming world civilisation.

After taking his M.A. at Oxford, Roger Hicks taught history in Madras University. Later he studied theology at Westcott House, Cambridge.

Of his previous book, The Endless Adventure, Life of Faith wrote: ‘This book makes challenging and fascinating reading. . . . Those whose faith is small will find much to fan it into new flame. . . . This is a book not to be missed.’

Some Press Opinions:
“The method is to take each phrase of the Lord’s Frayer, and expound its meaning and implications in a series of questions and answers. The author draws upon a wealth of quotations as well as on his own often very apt and pithy phrases.” The Church Times

Presented with an altogether laudable economy of phrase and an admirable pungency in expression. There is brevity and sanity. Every word is weighed and every thought is uttered precisely. There is a useful final chapter on “The Coming World Civilization” sub-titled in a few words summation of its contents, the prospect of “A New Society, designed by God and worked by everyone”. The Church of Ireland Gazette

“Written in jargonless racy style, every page has a punch in simple virile English. This little book is a work of infectious enthusiasm. “ The Irish Catholic

“Mr Hicks writes with real understanding as he seeks to express eternal truths in contemporary ways.” The Methodist Recorder

“A refreshingly frank book.” Life of Faith

“A practical study-guide to the Lord’s Prayer relating it to the discoveries of science and to the questions faced by modem man. Written in modem idiom and in straightforward style, it will be a “discovery” for study course for Youth Fellowships, Women’s Guilds, Adult Christian Education groups and Kirk Sessions.” Manse Mail

“Helpful and practical, and will do much to encourage faith and hope. “ Christian Herald

“More than just a treatise. It is also a text book on prayer itself and its relevance today.” Christian Endeavor

“To read this book is to discover depths of meaning that modern man needs to realize and understand.” The Inquirer

“The book is simply written and easy to read. Intermittently in the text are questions that could stimulate thought and discussion amongst Rangers or other young people. Extracts could be read in Guides’ meetings or trainings or the book might be found personally helpful and challenging to anyone from fifteen years upwards.” The Guider
